MTV Exclusive: Meet Godfrey Gao aka Magnus Bane On The Set Of 'Mortal Instruments'

Meet Magnus Bane On The Set Of 'Mortal Instruments': "There's actually a really big pressure because I know there are a lot of fans out there, and everyone loves Magnus Bane," Godfrey Gao says of playing Magnus Bane from the set of "Mortal Instruments." "It's really cold," Godfrey said, all smiles. "At first, I was like, 'All right, I thought this party was going to be an indoor mansion with a lot of lights and chandeliers like you see in back.' Turns out, it's outside, and it's actually, I think, 11 degrees Celsius, so I'm just hanging out with my boxers on and everyone sees ... I have great legs. But it's very fun to play Magnus Bane, as you can see." (For reference, the temperature in Fahrenheit is just over 50 degrees.) But the chill wasn't Gao's main concern. As he told our own Josh Horowitz, the actor understands the great responsibility he's undertaken portraying the fan-favorite character from Cassandra Clare's series about the secret world of the demon-destroying Shadowhunters. "There's actually a really big pressure because I know there are a lot of fans out there, and everyone loves Magnus Bane, and I love Magnus Bane," he said. "So I just wanted to play a sort of cool-looking Magnus Bane, but I also wanted to bring out the flamboyant side. The party side of Magnus Bane, so hopefully everybody can enjoy what I bring to you on screen." And for those who can't get enough of the warlock, Clare revealed that an extra Magnus scene was written into the screenplay that didn't originally appear in the book. "It is really cool," Gao said of the bonus moment. "This whole ride has been amazing. I really got to thank everybody... This is my first English feature. I'm actually pretty nervous doing this interview now. I never do any interviews in English, it was always in Mandarin before."

MTV Exclusive: Lily Collins aka Clary Fray Was Drawn To The 'Mortal Instruments' Story

Lily on what drew her to The Mortal Instruments: “I love the stories. I love Clary because she’s this heroine who’s this normal girl, who finds out she has these powers,” the actress told MTV News during a recent visit to the Toronto-based set. “The emotion is there. It’s not just a CGI world. It’s not just a translation of a book. It’s more emotionally, character-based than just aesthetically beautiful.”

Lily on her character: “I love Clary. I love this series,” she enthused. “I’m so ready. I’m so ready to be a Shadowhunter a little more since I’ve only gotten a taste of it in this film.”

Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace) on Lily: “To get to watch Lily do something — that’s really amazing,” he said. “There have been times I’ve been in a scene with Lily, and she’s doing something, and I just zone out, being like ‘God, you’re brilliant. Oh wait! I’m actually meant to be saying something.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, crikey! There’s words at this point.”

Robert Sheehan (Simon) on Lily: “She’s an absolute star and incredible, on-the-moment brilliant actor and consummate professional,” said Robert Sheehan, who plays Clary’s best friend Simon. “It’s lovely to have someone like that for the really emotional, dramatic stuff. That’s what really makes the film, first and foremost, a human story. Because if it’s not that, it’s not really relatable or interesting.”

MTV Exclusive: Meet Robert Sheehan aka Simon Lewis On The Set Of 'The Mortal Instruments'

Exclusive: Meet Simon On The Set Of 'The Mortal Instruments': On the set of "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones" we catch up with Simon Lewis (Robert Sheehan).

“It’s very clear from the beginning of the story that Simon is quite desperately in love with his friend, who’s been his best friend pretty much all their lives,” Sheehan explained of his character’s affections for Clary. “And it eventually comes to the fore, and they kind of work through it. It’s interestingly written in the script because it’s kind of just about small conversations that happen between two friends and eventually ends up in, ‘Hey, by the way…’ And it’s been a lovely part, and I’m working with that amateur Lily Collins, and I’m dragging her through the dramatic stuff, you know.” And while the leather-clad, weapon-wielding Shadowhunters (which also include Kevin Zegers and Jemima West) are arguably much hipper than nerdy Simon, Sheehan says he doesn’t envy his Nephilim-portraying counterparts. “They may look cool in their leather and sexy boots, but they have to come in about two hours before I do every day to get those rune tattoos put on and taken off and put on and taken off, so they get a lot less sleep than I do.

MTV Exclusive: On The Set Of "Mortal Instruments'

Exclusive: On The Set Of "Mortal Instruments': MTV News' catches up with Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower and more stars on the "Mortal Instruments" set.

Here’s what the cast had to say:

Lily Collins: ”It’s really a story that’s based in reality as much as it is in this fantasy world. They’re coexisting. It’s more emotionally and character-based than just aesthetically beautiful. It’s got amazing imagery and the CGI is going to be incredible, but it’s not just about that.”

Jamie Campbell Bower: “We’re standing here. It’s like three o’clock in the morning. I’m not in the world’s greatest mood, but I get to go to work, and I get to be a bit of an a–hole.”

Kevin Zegers: ”I kind of didn’t really have a whole lot of time thinking about it. Which is kinda good, because you just sort of jump on to something like this and it’s been fun, man. This is totally new for me.”

Jemima West: “I’m totally excited to be apart of it. And I started feeling the excitement as it all happened. Once I got the script, once I’ve read the script, once I started reading the books. Then I realized this was a huge deal and being apart of it. I’m so lucky.”

Robbie Sheehan: “We started shooting this around Toronto City most places that we went to there were fans there waiting for us. There was, you know, ten or fifteen mainly teenage girls waiting for us. And it was quite jarring to be kind of handed the book of the Mortal Instruments and to be asked to sign it. You know, on the first few days of filming, thinking this isn’t my book, you know, I am not responsible for any of the words or any of the story in there. So that was quite odd. But I did it anyway. And I even drew boobs on some of the books.”

Vikings Season 1 Finale Recap & Review

Last night I watched the Season 1 Finale of the show Vikings. To say I was floored is an understatement. The first thing I should let y'all know is that I started watching the series late, but became obsessed instantly. The show centers around Ragnar Lothbrok, the Viking that wants to travel West. He is convinced there is land & riches there and he proves correct when he comes upon England. Now, later in the season after he becomes Earl of the Vikings he goes through many hard struggles which leads to the season 1 finale. In the finale we see him being unfaithful to his wife Lagertha Lothbrok with the woman Aslaug. During his affair he is also trying to resolve land dispute for King Horik with Jarl Borg. Ragnar's son Byorn having witnessed his father having sex with Aslaug makes Ragnar promise not to do it again if he really loves his mother Lagertha. While all this is going on, back in Ragnar's village Kattegat, a plague is ravaging the area and his daughter Gyda dies. Right after she dies Aslaug tells Ragnar she is pregnant with his child. Floki having news from King Horik tells Jarl Borg that he must sell the land to him...there is no or else involved. Jarl says no & that Ragnar and his men will have to leave in the morning. Ragnar in the end goes to Aslaug and lays his head on her belly all the while his brother Rollo makes an alliance with Jarl to fight against Ragnar & King Horik. This show is amazing & if you haven't watched it yet please go onto the History Channel's website to watch the season. I cried a couple times during the finale I simply could help it. I really feel for Lagertha & am angry with Ragnar for being unfaithful to her.
I can't wait to see what Season 2 brings in 2014! :D ~V

REVIEW: What Really Happened in Peru (The Bane Chronicles Part #1) by Cassandra Clare & Sarah Rees Brennan

What Really Happened in Peru (The Bane Chronicles Part #1)
Released: April 16, 2013
By Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan

Summary:

Fans of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices know that Magnus Bane is banned from Peru—and now they can find out why. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles.

There are good reasons Peru is off-limits to Magnus Bane. Follow Magnus’s Peruvian escapades as he drags his fellow warlocks Ragnor Fell and Catarina Loss into trouble, learns several instruments (which he plays shockingly), dances (which he does shockingly), and disgraces his host nation by doing something unspeakable to the Nazca Lines.

This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. This story in The Bane Chronicles, What Really Happened in Peru, is written by Sarah Rees Brennan and Cassandra Clare.

Review:

So I am a huge fan of Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter books & recently read the first installment in The Bane Chronicles called What Really Happened in Peru! The whole thing is rather funny, but also sad when Magnus gets his heart broken. My favorite part in it is when Catarina & Ragnor tell Magnus about his drunken escapades. LoLz! Just imagining Magnus enchanting a carpet and flying around on it has me cracking up laughing. The main thing that annoyed me, but I kind of expected was that we weren't told why Magnus was actually banned from Peru! I hope Cassie lets us know one day. I'll post a review for each installment in The Bane Chronicles as they are released & I've read them! Have a great weekend! ;)
