Book Review: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories by Washington Irving + Halloween Book Giveaway!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories
by Washington Irving
Release Date: September 30th, 2014

SUMMARY:

Perhaps the marker of a true mythos is when the stories themselves overshadow their creator. Originally published under a pseudonym as The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW AND OTHER STORIES (A Penguin Classics Original) gave America its own haunted mythology. This new collection of larger-than-life tales contains Washington Irving’s best-known literary inventions—Ichabod Crane, the Headless Horseman, and Rip Van Winkle—that continue to capture our imaginations today, and features an introduction and notes by Elizabeth L. Bradley, author of Knickerbocker: The Myth Behind New York and literary consultant to Historic Hudson Valley, the caretakers of Irving’s Tarrytown, New York home.

The setting of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is renowned for the supernaturalism that pervades the imaginations of its inhabitants and visitors. The most infamous specter in the Hollow is the Headless Horseman, said to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during the American Revolutionary War, and who “rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head.” The “Legend” relates the tale of Ichabod Crane, a superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with townsman Abraham Van Brunt for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer, Baltus Van Tassel. Crane sees marriage to Katrina as a means of procuring Van Tassel’s extravagant wealth. Bones, the local hero, vies with Ichabod for Katrina's hand, playing a series of pranks on the jittery schoolmaster, and the fate of Sleepy Hollow's fortune weighs in the balance for some time. The tension among the three is soon brought to a head.

REVIEW:

Recently, I was sent a copy of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories to review. This book is a compilation of several incredible short stories by Washington Irving. I must say, I found The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to be extremely intriguing and right up my alley as to what I am always looking for in a good read. I felt really drawn to the stories in this book and found it difficult to put down. Irving's writing style is very interesting and I can honestly say I have never read anything quite like his work. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers and especially those who would love to read the whole original story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. If you are expecting the story to be like the show, then think again because I can assure you, it is quite different. The the original story I enjoy on its own and that is the way I enjoy the show. I will definitely read this entire book of Irving's work again in the near future.

EXCERPT:
HUDSON COULD HEAR the car’s engine from blocks away. He stepped outside the garage and closed his eyes, listening, picking apart the sounds so that he would know exactly what he’d have to fix before he even popped the hood.
Standing there against the garage, listening to the still far off car, Hudson could forget about everything else. About school and girls and his future and whether his friends were actually jackasses or just acting like them. With his eyes closed, Hudson could reduce the world to a single engine and nothing more; a world where he could not only name every little part but knew what it was for, how it worked, how to fix it.
He opened his eyes when he heard the car’s brakes chirp as it slowed to turn into the garage. It was an old Plymouth Acclaim, the kind of car you either happily sent off to die or loved with your entire heart and refused to let go of. It had seen better days, its red paint job chipped and faded, its muffler not doing much muffling. He waved the driver forward to where he was standing. He was still identifying the car’s problems when the girl killed the engine and climbed out.
He only allowed himself a quick glance at her, knowing as soon as he saw her that she was the kind of girl who could make you think your life was not complete unless she was in it. She was a jumble of contradictions: short but with long legs, fierce green eyes but a kind expression, baby faced but wise. She was wearing a snug, plain red Tshirt that matched her car. Her hair was down, the black locks reaching just past her chin.
“Afternoon,” she said, offering a polite smile.
He replied in kind, trying to adopt the professional tone he used with most customers. He asked her to pop the hood and then walked to the front of the car to release the latch. He meant to bury himself in work right away, but against instinct he stole another glance. How long would the memory of her face haunt him? Days? Weeks? “You having trouble with anything specific?”
“Well, not really,” she said, slipping her hands into the back pockets of her shorts, which made
her posture change in a way Hudson couldn’t help but notice. The quiet world outside the garage noticed the change in her posture, the damp Mississippi air noticed, even the various grease stains spread out on the garage floor noticed. “I just got started on a road trip, and it’s making a lot of noise, so I wanted to be sure it’s in shape.”
Hudson grabbed a clean rag off a nearby shelf and checked the oil and the transmission fluid. He liked working in relative silence, nothing but the subtle sound of the cooling engine, his hands and tools on the machine. Something about this girl, though, made him chatty.
“Where you goin’?”
“North,” she said. “All the way north.”
“You from around here?” He suddenly felt self conscious about his drawl, the hitch in his
vowels, the overall lackluster quality of his presence. “Nope. You?”
He chuckled as he ran his hands around the engine, checking for cracks in belts.
“Born and raised.”

About the Author:
Adi Alsaid was born and raised in Mexico City, then studied at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While in class, he mostly read fiction and continuously failed to fill out crossword puzzles, so it's no surprise that after graduating, he did not go into business world but rather packed up his apartment into his car and escaped to the California coastline to become a writer. He's now back in his hometown, where he writes, coaches high school and elementary basketball, and has perfected the art of making every dish he eats or cooks as spicy as possible. In addition to Mexico, he's lived in Tel Aviv, Las Vegas, and Monterey, California. A tingly feeling in his feet tells him more places will eventually be added to the list. Let's Get Lost is his YA debut.

EXCERPT:
After half an hour of aimless driving, the air hadn’t
cooled at all. The faux-velvet seats had become
uncomfortably sticky, so they decided to park and
stretch their legs for a bit. Seeking solace from the
heat, they chose a spot under the shade of a tree
with long, low-hanging branches that reached out
over the street like protective arms.

Across the road from them, surrounded by a ten-
foot white wall that stretched farther than Bree
could see, was the Kansas City Country Club. The
landscaping outside was immaculate, everything
bright green and evenly trimmed, bushes rounded
into perfect spheres. Every now and then a car
would drive up to the lone valet attendant. The
people getting out of the cars were dressed up, the
men in expensive looking suits, cuff links, and
pocket squares, the women decked out in jewelry
and brand-name handbags. A big, golden Mercedes
came up the driveway. A car like that had never
once stopped to pick Bree up when she was
hitchhiking.

“I bet that Mercedes has some pretty sweet AC,”
Bree said.

“I bet,” Leila said. She wiped at the sweat on her
forehead. “It looks like there’s some kind of event
going on.”

The sun was still high, the sunset a couple of hours
away. Bree felt her shirt stick to her lower back.

“Yeah . . .” Bree said, her voice trailing off. “You
think they’d mind if we borrowed it for a little
while?”

Leila turned to Bree, arching one eyebrow. “It
would be nice to drive around with some air-
conditioning for a bit. Why? Your soul getting itchy
again?”

They watched the valet attendant get into the car,
drive about fifty feet up the driveway, and turn into
the parking lot that was hidden from view. After a
few moments he reappeared, trotting back to the
entrance, waiting for the next car to show up. He
left the keys of the Mercedes on a hook next to
about two dozen other sets of luxury-car keys.

“We’ll just borrow it for an hour,” Bree said. “They
won’t even notice it’s gone.”

“I’m not so sure about that. Rich people have a
weird sixth sense about their belongings.”

“It’ll just be a few quick laps on the highway.”

“Quick because there’ll be someone chasing us?”

“No one will be chasing us.”

“I know,” Leila said. “I’m stalling because I’m
nervous.”

“Hey, I’m not gonna deny you the right to be
nervous. But once you’ve dealt with your nerves, I
think you know what we have to do.”

“What do we say if someone catches us?”

“That we were dying of heat stroke and it was a
medical emergency,” Bree said.

Leila paused. “Then we’ll come right back and leave
it exactly where it was before?”

“Same parking spot.”

Another car was coming up the street, likely
headed for the club. The girls looked at each other,
grinning like madmen. Bree could feel her
heartbeat speed up

.
Bree opened the door. “Come on, we’ll grab the
keys when the valet’s parking this car.”

Leila took a few deep breaths, as if she was about
to try swimming a long distance underwater. “Seize
the Tuesday,” she said.

They jogged across the street and hid behind the
outer wall of the country club. When they heard
the valet start pulling the car around, they left their
cover and walked quickly up the driveway. The keys
were hanging unprotected, as tempting as pies
cooling on windowsills. Bree reached them first,
grabbing the set with that recognizable Mercedes

symbol glinting silver in the sunlight. It was almost
disappointingly easy.

“Just act like you belong here,” Bree said as they
walked into the parking lot. “The best ID in the
world is a smile and a wave.”

The weight of the keys in her hand already felt so
gratifying, more than her entire duffel bag of stolen
goods had. She couldn’t wait to get into the car, to
start the engine, to drive around and pretend that
cold air had been their only motivation.

“Can I help you guys?”

The valet appeared up ahead, a couple of rows
over. He wasn’t badlooking, Bree thought to
herself. He was goofy in his valet’s vest, his white
button-down shirt more shoved into his pants than
patiently tucked. He had the kind of facial hair that
can’t quite yet be more than scruff.

“We just need to get something out of the car,”
Bree said, not slowing down.

The valet squinted at them, noticing the keys in
Bree’s hand. She closed her fist tightly against
them, as if he might try to take them away from
her forcefully. She wondered if they could outrun
him.

“Oh,” he said, starting to walk in their direction.
“Are, uh, are you guys club members?”

“My parents just forgot something,” Bree said,
pointing vaguely in the direction of the golden
Mercedes. Leila followed Bree’s lead, but the valet
kept walking toward them, as if he meant to cut
them off. He’d pulled his cell phone out of his
pocket. “Okay,” he said, but it was clear that he
wasn’t going to leave them.

Shit, Bree thought, sensing an impassable obstacle.
Then she remembered how easy it had been to just
walk away with all they’d stolen at the convenience
store, how that guy pumping his gas had looked at
them. The Mercedes was only about three cars
away now, close enough that the remote would
have no trouble unlocking the doors. She met the
valet’s gaze, searching his rather pretty eyes for
something besides suspicion.

“Can I ask you a question?” she said, stepping right
up to him.

“Um,” he said. They were standing by the
Mercedes now. The valet’s gaze went from the car,
to Leila, to Bree, who was now less than an arm’s
length away. “Sure.”

“When was the last time you felt really alive?”

“What?”

Without another word, Bree put her hand on his
waist and pulled herself toward him. She kissed
him with abandon. Despite what had happened,
Bree still believed in reckless kisses. She pulled
back and couldn’t help but laugh at the dazed look
in the valet’s eyes
.
“Whoa,” he said.

Teen Wolf Season 4 Episode 4 - The Benefactor Recap & Review Vlog!

Hey everyone!
Check out my latest vlog where I discuss episode 4 of Teen Wolf Season 4. This episode was really awesome especially because it was a full moon episode. This episode was a really great character development episode for both Liam and Malia. What really got to me in this episode though was finding out more about Liam and how he is worried about how his mom and stepfather will look at him if they find out he is a werewolf. He thinks they will see him as a monster and then Scott says, "You're not a monster. You're a werewolf, like me." I think Scott is going to be a great Alpha to him and a really great person for him to look up to. Make sure to stay tuned as I continue to do these recap & review vlogs every week for each episode of Teen Wolf.

Daniel Radcliffe stars as Ig Perrish, a young man who awakens with horns sprouting from his head shortly after his girlfriend's mysterious death. This movie looks quite intriguing and I am very excited to see if it lives up to all of our expectations when it hits theaters. Check out the teaser trailer below.

Teen Wolf Season 4 Episode 1 - The Dark Moon Recap & Review Vlog!

Hey everyone!
Check out my latest vlog where I discuss episode 1 of Teen Wolf Season 4. This episode was pretty fun and cool. I really love how Scott and his pack went to Mexico on their search for Derek. Some very interesting parts were the flashback scenes where we got to know a bit more about what happened with Kate Argent after her supposed "death" in season 1 and about the Calavares Werewolf hunter family. Make sure to stay tuned as I continue to do these recap & review vlogs every week for each episode of Teen Wolf.

(Note: This was filmed on Wednesday and was meant as my first Wolfie Wednesday Recap & Review Vlog, but I just got moved into a new place and due to technical difficulties, I was unable to get the video online until today. It may take me a bit of time to get the videos up when they are meant to be posted, so bear with me.)

Excerpt

“Excuse me!” I said as I instinctively grabbed his arm. Yeah, those arms could hold me. I took an extra moment to put my surveying skills to work and appraised everything attached to his semi-flexed bicep. A little over six-feet-tall. Brown hair. Brown eyes. Athletic build. Nice. No ring on the left hand. Very nice. Goatee. Meh. Light blue dress shirt and tan Dockers. Well, at least he looks professional.

He’d flashed a sideward glance to the place where my fingers rested and said, “You’re okay. Look, no harm done.” He nodded toward the tray wrapped in his exceptionally large hands. All the items had slid back to rest against his chest, but nothing had spilled over. “You must really be in a hurry Dr…Porter.” He’d said as he glanced at the I.D. badge clipped above my left breast.

“Actually, I am. I just came to grab something quick before making rounds.” I watched as his eyes moved toward the arm where my hand was still resting.

“Well, you’ve grabbed me, so now what?” He flashed a charmingly crooked grin.
