Book Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

FangirlWHERE TO BUY: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Book Depository, Books-A-Million

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS: Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan.... But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she's really good at it. She and her twin, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fanfiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to.

Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend; a fiction-writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world; a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words...and she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

MY REVIEW: This was such a FUN read! And a fast one at that! By far my favorite Rainbow Rowell book! Cath is definitely me in college. I wrote fanfiction, I was socially awkward, I was (and still am) weird around boys. It was fun to read about the experience from an outside perspective! I really enjoyed how passionate she was about fanfiction and Simon Snow. She didn't let anyone try to talk her out of what she was passionate about, not even her professor. She was witty, funny, and all around fun to learn and read about.

Reagan, Cath's roommate, was a huge star of this book. She was SO funny and sarcastic. Her dry humor and her interactions with Cath made the book for me a lot of the times. She was so brash in her approach to life, but it was so endearing to me.

Wren, Cath's twin sister, took a long while for me to warm up to. I did not like this girl for a majority of the book. Mainly because of how she treated Cath, but then it turned into because she was stupid. The way that she was living her life made me cringe. As I was reading about Wren, I thought that her lifestyle was going to get her into trouble sooner or later. She had no buffer and was constantly taking jabs at Cath for various things. While I understand the need for independence, especially as freshmen in college -- Cath was her twin sister and she shouldn't have been treating her like some stranger. It wasn't cool.

Levi, oh my sweet adorable Levi, what on earth to say about this guy? Other than he was absolute flawed perfection on paper. Levi was so fun! He was energetic, friendly, supportive, vulnerable, honest -- everything you could want in a first boyfriend. Sure, he made his fair mistakes but overall, he was a really great character. Developed well and fun to follow. I really loved his interactions with Cath. He really was enamored with her. And it was fun to witness her become just as enamored and not know how to handle it.

Rowell did a fantastic job on painting an accurate picture of the fangirl transition -- from high school to college -- where people most likely wouldn't understand why fanfiction, midnight book releases, etc. are so important. Witnessing Cath come into herself was one of the most rewarding things about this book. She grows so much throughout the book, but by the end of the story, you really sit back and think of how far she has come. WIth the help of Reagan, Levi, Wren and even her professor. There's a character, Nick, that teaches the not-so-fun college lesson to Cath. And I was so proud of her for how she handles him at the end. She's just a different, though the same, girl at the end of this book.

I loved it. Fantastically written, fun, friendly, adorable -- all of the words!

MY RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars!

‘Teen Wolf’ Season 4 Spoilers: The First Episode to Take Place Outside of Beacon Hills

Teen Wolf fans, it is SPOILER TIME! Actually, nothing is spoiled too badly right here as long as each of you have seen every episode of Teen Wolf that has aired so far. If some of you have yet to catch up on the seasons and you read this you all have been warned!

"Teen Wolf" promises something different when the MTV series returns for the brand new Season 4 in June 2014 including a different setting. Series creator Jeff Davis teased that the first episode of "Teen Wolf" Season 4 will take place outside of Beacon Hills.

"The first episode of season 4 takes place in Mexico," the series creator shared in the Zap2it report. Why will Scott (Tyler Posey) and the pack be going to Mexico? The Enstars spoiler report claims it has something to do with helping Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) in the new season premiere episode.

According to series creator Jeff Davis, the first episode of the new season is titled "The Dark Moon." Mr Davis explained: "The Dark Moon is the time in the lunar phase in which the moon is the least visible in the sky and it's often thought of a time of reflection and grief."

Jeff Davis described the first Season 4 episode to be their action-packed "Raiders of the Lost Ark" that will take the "Teen Wolf" gang to a new direction. "It's going to take some time to get over [Allison's death]. But these resilient teenagers are going to have new challenges to face. What happens in season 4 is very human problems start to arise," Mr Davis shared in the Entertainment Weekly interview.

The series creator teased as well that Alpha werewolf Scott McCall may be helping Derek but the teenage werewolf will be dealing with his own human problems in "Teen Wolf" Season 4. "What happens in season 4 is very human problems start to arise. He's faced a lot of supernatural problems but now he's going to have some very difficult human ones," Jeff Davis shared.

Mr Davis further added that he came up with the idea that comes from real-life issues. From there, it will introduce new villains in the TV series giving more difficult times for Scott, his friends and his family. For the theme of "Teen Wolf" Season 4, the series creator admitted that there will be a feeling of "The Empire Strikes Back."

VIDEO: 'True Blood' Season 7 Clip Tease

This Summer, the seventh and final season of True Blood will air. I know I am not the only one thinking this when I say that the way the book series ended was a big disappointment, so we really need a good conclusion to the show. HBO has just released the first clip teaser for the final season and while we do not see Eric, I refuse to believe he is dead. The clip teaser can be seen below.

VIDEO: 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Final Trailer and More!

Next month the highly anticipated new X-Men movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released. Today, 20th Century Fox has given us quite the treat by releasing an amazing and action packed final trailer for the movie. I am really hoping that with this movie a lot of the story lines will be tied together believably and smoothly. If you all have seen X-Men: The Last Stand you know what was messed up in it and I really hope the errors made in that movie are made up for in this film. X-Men: First Class definitely took the world of X-Men to a new level which will be hard to top. This film will certainly not be lacking in the casting department as all the actors involved are incredibly talented and we get younger versions as well as older versions of some of our favorite characters. One thing I already really need explained is why the younger Charles Xavier seems to be walking in some of the scenes of Days of Future Past when we saw hime become paralyzed at the end of First Class. Without further ado, check out the third and final trailer below! Also, in case some of you missed it, I have also included the "Opening Battle" Clip below that was shown during the 2014 MTV Movie Awards the other night. Enjoy!

X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters on May 23rd, 2014!

Excerpt
"You don't want me to taste you?" I asked, arching my eyebrow.
Shea held me against him, his exposed hardness pressing insistently into my stomach.
"Is that even a question?" Shea paused, as he pulled me closer and whispered into my hair. "I want nothing more than to have your mouth on my cock, but I won't have you on your knees in a restaurant bathroom." He loosened his embrace and started to zip up his pants. I felt kind of pouty. I had wanted him and now the moment was gone. Shea put his fingers under my chin and raised my head so I could look him in the eye.
"Baby, having you on your knees is one of my greatest wet dreams," he chuckled.

I began writing music and poetry at an early age. My love of music became my sole focus and I spent quite a few years as the lead singer for many local rock bands. In high school I was fascinated with the macabre and started writing science fiction and horror stories so dark they earned me the nickname "Gory Cory." After years of writing dark tales, I never thought in a million years my first two finished manuscripts would be Adult Romance. Bite & Release will be the first book published sometime in late May/early June and Reviving Haven; my second book will be released at the end of July. The themes of both books are older women/younger men and are for 18+ due to language, sexual situations and subject matter. Both are stand alone with no cliffhanger.

Book Review: Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith

WHERE TO BUY:
SYNOPSIS:
Sixteen-year-old Austin Szerba interweaves the story of his Polish legacy with the story of how he and his best friend , Robby, brought about the end of humanity and the rise of an army of unstoppable, six-foot tall praying mantises in small-town Iowa.

To make matters worse, Austin’s hormones are totally oblivious; they don’t care that the world is in utter chaos: Austin is in love with his girlfriend, Shann, but remains confused about his sexual orientation. He’s stewing in a self-professed constant state of maximum horniness, directed at both Robby and Shann. Ultimately, it’s up to Austin to save the world and propagate the species in this sci-fright journey of survival, sex, and the complex realities of the human condition.
MY REVIEW:
Seriously… WTF was this book?
I bounced between a 4-star and a 5-star rating for about 12 hours. Mainly because this book was a lot to process, but not in a bad way. Andrew Smith is crazy. This book is crazy. The plot is crazy. The characters were extremely hormonal (they’re teenagers – boys, at that!). I cannot begin to count how many times Smith used the word ‘horny’ while we were in Austin’s, the main character, head!
Anyway, this story follows the life of Austin Szerba and his confusion over his sexual orientation. That, to me, was the primary focus. He was in love with his girlfriend (since the 7th grade), Shann and also with his best friend, Robby. Through his trying to figure out his preferences, he and Robby accidentally unleashed a plague upon the small town of Ealing, IA. People become infected/infested with parasitic “stuffs” and mutant grasshoppers hatch from within their bodies. Gross, I know!
This is definitely a weird adventure. And I don’t use that term lightly. While the grasshopper part was interesting enough, I found myself more interested in Austin and his relationship struggles. He is a comical, though horny boy who likes to feel good and he always has sex on the brain. I laughed out loud at times, especially when he was telling stories about getting in trouble for reading specific books or when he and Robby were “experimenting”. It felt awkward because it was, but it was also one of my favorite moments in the book.
The characters DID fall a bit flat for me at time, while I really enjoyed Robby, I didn’t come to learn too much about him. Shann — I really knew nothing about her personally. Austin was the only one that I can say that I kind of knew the most, but that’s because we were in his head the entire time.
This time around, I feel that Smith focused on the weird, complex plot of mutant grasshoppers and Austin’s sexual orientation experimenting. Not a bad thing, but I do kind of feel like something was sacrified for the sake of the weird plot.
With that being said, I enjoyed the book. I like how weird it was, I like Austin’s confusion over Shann & Robby. While this book is primarily about a boy’s adolescence and self-discovery, Smith threw in some Storm Trooper crap to make it more interesting. And it was absolutely more interesting. I 100% like “Winger” a lot better, but this one was not a bad read at all!
MY RATING: 4 out of 5 stars!

Release Date: March 31st, 2014

SUMMARY:

Add secrets, treasure, and unimaginable heartbreak for an emotionally humorous read and discover why Dragons Don’t Cry.

EXCERPT:

Click. Click…
“Oh hell no.” I somehow managed to launch myself at the offending nail. It was bigger than the upper portion of my body but I landed on it with one goal… make that infernal noise stop.
His leg shifted beneath me but the claw I held didn’t move. A talon from his opposite appendage pushed, rolling me sideways but I held tight. He lowered his head and one red eye gazed directly into mine.
“Stupid human female named Acasia. Beg for your life.” The gruff voice sounded loudly in my head.
My stomach rolled again but I managed to speak, “Why should I beg when I can no longer take the smell. Dying would be a blessing.” A low groan left my throat.
“Humph.” The sound thundered through the room.
A dragon humphed me, the ass.
“What about the smell do you find displeasing?” he demanded, his voice rupturing every brain cell I possessed.
Was he serious? I couldn’t release his claw because he might continue the racket that drove me crazy but more than anything, I wanted to plug my nose. I looked away from his gaze, twisting so I could see what caused the repulsive odor. I also didn’t release his claw because for some strange reason, touching him calmed me.
What I saw turned my stomach upside down again and I swallowed back the bile in my throat. Partially devoured carcasses littered the floor—a leg here, thigh there—all in various stages of decay. Oh my gods, I was losing it again. I tried pushing away but didn’t make it. More chunky vomit spewed from my stomach landing on his talon and foot, or arm, whatever the hell it was.
When the heaving stopped, I finally answered, “Death, I smell death.”
“Humph. You smell of vomit and fermented drink. I don’t believe you are one to speak.”
“Gods do it, just do it you hulking jerk.”
“Do what, human female named Acasia?”
“Kill me, please,” it came out on a shriek.
“You humans are strange.” This time, his other talon shoved me farther away, abruptly moving me from his barf covered claw.
A deer hoof attached to a partial leg rested two inches in front of my face. I managed to scramble to my feet. I saw the dragon lift his middle claw.
Oh no he wouldn’t. “If you do that, I’ll puke on your other foot.”
“You have one last chance to beg for your life.” His jaws didn’t move but his grumbling voice threaded through my mind. Now, it was deep and husky like him calling my name when I waited with my claiming sisters.
Where my bravado came from, I don’t know. “I will not beg. Eat me.”
He reared up on his hind legs, his wings spreading out. I didn’t move, waiting for death—embracing it. The air moved when his wings flapped. For two seconds he hovered and then he rose until he rested on a ledge hundreds of feet above me.
He peered over his shoulder, “I will eat you tomorrow.” With a last look at where I stood, he went over the side, out of view.

REVIEW:
Going into this book I expected a lot from it and was given exactly what I wanted. This story is about the love between a young woman named Acasia and a Dragon shifter named Bastian. Long ago the dragon race was cursed by the goddess Hera to be mateless. They would be compelled to take a new human bride every 100 years and be doomed to lose them over and over until they find their one true mate. What I really loved about this story was how Acasia was such a strong character and she held her own against Bastian. Bastian and the plight of the dragon race really touched my heart. There are many obstacles that Acasia and Bastian overcome, but in the end there is happiness and a bright light of hope at the end of the tunnel for the rest of the dragon race.

Book Review: Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

WHERE TO BUY: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

MY REVIEW:
This was such an interesting take on humans & aliens! I liked it a lot. This is only my second Jennifer L. Armentrout book, but I am simply adoring this woman! The way that she develops her characters is unlike a lot of authors I read.

The main characters in this story, Katy & Daemon, are the perfect duo. They play off of each other so well and I just how their stories intertwine throughout the book. Originally, Katy got on my nerves, just a little bit. She was constantly making "unsmart" decisions and I couldn't quite understand why. But then again, I actually could. It was just frustrating at times. But as the book went on, she turned into this kick ass woman/girl. With such ambitious and fight in her. I definitely appreciated her character, especially her fierce loyalty and love for Dee (and the other aliens). She is definitely a character I love.

Moving on to Daemon -- it is very apparent that Jennifer likes her bad boys. Very apparent, indeed. Daemon is deemed a bad boy from page one. He is snarky, sarcastic, flirtatious. But he's also fiercely protective and loyal to those that he cares about, especially his sister, Dee. I enjoyed him from the second I was introduced to his character. And the cool part about him is that he developed quite well throughout the book, but not to the point where you barely recognized him from the beginning. He's still a jerk, which I love.

His interactions with Katy, Dee, or anyone were so much fun to read about. Didn't matter who you were, he was going to be himself. And I love that.

Obsidian is the perfect introduction to the Lux series, I honestly couldn't put this book down. I read it in about 5 hours. Definitely a five-star book for me!

MY RATING: 5 out of 5 stars!
